Finding New Hope After Stroke with Bowen Therapy

In 2010, at age 54, I suffered a major brain stem stroke that left me completely paralyzed on my left side. My recovery journey was long and challenging. Most of the lasting effects involved mobility issues and severe drop foot. Through hard work and determination, I defied the odds and eventually learned to walk again — unassisted. But I continued to live with drop foot and a noticeable limp.

After a couple of bad falls and another stroke in 2023, I experienced a major setback. My progress stalled, and I reached what doctors call a “plateau” in recovery — that frustrating point where improvement seems to stop.

Around that time, I reconnected with Michelle, someone I’ve known for many years. She told me about Bowen Therapy, a gentle technique designed to help the body reset and heal. Michelle also mentioned that she combines it with therapeutic massage in a unique approach she calls “Bowsage.” Since I’m not driving right now, I was grateful that she offered in-home sessions so I could give it a try.

I’ve now had four or five Bowsage sessions, and the results have truly surprised me. Michelle explained that Bowen can help open pathways in the body and calm the nervous system — a different kind of calm than the “stroke fatigue” I was used to. My wife and I both noticed changes, not only in how relaxed I felt, but also in my mobility.

I use a walker to get around, and before Bowen, my left foot would drag every few steps. Now, it’s barely dragging at all — and sometimes, not at all. For anyone who’s gone through stroke recovery, you’ll understand how huge even small improvements can be, especially after reaching a plateau.

I’m continuing my Bowsage sessions with Michelle and look forward to each one with real enthusiasm. It’s given me renewed hope and noticeable progress when I thought there wasn’t any left to be made.

If you or someone you love is recovering from a stroke or dealing with mobility challenges, I encourage you to explore Bowen Therapy. Michelle is even open to taking a few new clients from my referrals — and I can’t recommend her enough.
